How Recreation Centers Work

Every household in The Villages pays a monthly amenity fee ($175–$200) which covers unlimited access to all recreation centers. There's no membership process — just bring your Villages ID card and walk in. Centers are open daily with varying hours, typically 6 AM to 9 PM.

Recreation centers come in two sizes: regional centers (large facilities with multiple pools, full fitness centers, sports courts, craft studios, and event halls) and neighborhood centers (smaller facilities with a pool, basic fitness room, and meeting space). Both are included in the amenity fee.

Craft Studios & Arts

Several regional centers have fully equipped craft studios where residents can take classes or work independently:

  • Pottery and ceramics studios with kilns and wheels
  • Woodworking shops with power tools and workbenches
  • Stained glass studios
  • Lapidary (gem cutting and polishing)
  • Quilting and sewing rooms
  • Photography darkrooms (increasingly digital labs)
  • Painting studios for watercolor, acrylic, and oil

Studio time is free; some classes charge a small materials fee ($5–$25). The woodworking and pottery studios are especially popular and may have waitlists during peak season.

Tips for Renters

  • Ask your landlord which rec center is closest to the property — this will be your daily go-to
  • Confirm your owner has submitted the Lifestyle ID form before arrival — pick up your IDs at Rohan Regional Rec Center (1st of month) or Lake Sumter Landing (other dates)
  • Visit 2-3 centers in your first week to find the one that matches your interests
  • Check the activity schedule posted at each center — classes fill up fast during peak season
  • Bring your own towels to the pool (towels are not provided)
  • Sports courts often have organized play times — ask at the desk when beginners play

Recreation Center Questions

How many recreation centers are in The Villages?

Over 100 recreation centers, ranging from small neighborhood centers with a pool and fitness room to large regional centers with multiple pools, sports courts, craft studios, and event halls. New centers are added as the community expands.

Can renters use the recreation centers?

Yes. Your property owner can arrange Temporary Lifestyle Resident IDs ($50 for 2 cards) which give you the same full access as homeowners — all rec centers, pools, executive golf at resident rates, and 3,000+ clubs. The owner submits a form before your arrival and you pick up IDs at Rohan Regional Rec Center or Lake Sumter Landing. Alternatively, free Guest IDs offer limited access for 30 days.

Do I have to use the rec center nearest my home?

No. Your Villages ID gives you access to any recreation center in the entire community. Many residents have a 'home' rec center they use daily and visit others for specific amenities or classes. There's no restriction on which centers you can use.

Are the pools heated?

Many pools are heated, especially at the larger regional centers. Some have both a heated pool and an unheated pool. Indoor pools (available at select centers) are heated year-round. Pool temperatures are typically maintained at 82-84°F during cooler months.

Do recreation centers have fitness equipment?

Most regional and many neighborhood centers have fitness rooms with cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals) and strength equipment. The larger centers have full gyms comparable to a commercial fitness club. Classes like yoga, water aerobics, and circuit training are offered at most centers.

Is there a cost to use the recreation centers?

No additional cost beyond the amenity fee ($175-$200/month), which is paid by the homeowner. This covers unlimited access to all recreation centers, pools, fitness facilities, and most activities. Some specialized craft studios and classes may have small material fees ($5-$25).
